Some black Squares… From Serra, Rothko, Albers back to Malevich. Serra show at the JBG finally closed…

There was a gentleman who came in one day and asked me why this Serra work was considered contemporary. He said that Kandinsky was making black squares long before Serra. Who should care about this anymore, do you care about it? he asked me.

Malevich always comes to my mind when I think of the black square. And so I brought him up. I thought I was correct. But then I found the work he was talking about. Kandinsky does have a black square. Several, actually.

Josh told me last night that Nina said that there are actually 19 famous black squares.

SIDE NOTE: Chris Brown to come at the JBG… The gallery is having an opening on the 2nd. Just in case you are interested.
